What happens when a robot feels something for the very first time? A new story by Heather O’Neill, this week on WireTap, with Jonathan Goldstein, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 (1:30 NT, 4: PT) on CBC Radio One.

Originally aired: December 11, 2005

Act I

The automated psychological services hotline helps an anonymous caller cope with a recently ended relationship.

Act II

Heather O’Neill reads “Robot Baby,” a story of the first baby born of an android.

Featuring:

  • Heather O’Neill

Notes: To androids, “jokes were merely equations with slightly incorrect answers.”

Act III

Jonathan becomes Howard’s first guest on his podcast “Livewire.” Per Howard: “a dangling wire on a rainy day on the street – don’t get near it – but you’re fascinated by it and you’re watching it, watching it coil in the rain, twisting and turning . . .” “Sounds dangerous,” comments Jonathan.

Featuring:

  • Howard Chackowicz
  • Jonathan Goldstein

Notes: In case you missed it, Howard introduces Jonathan as “media jerk,” “long-haired dopey,” and “wild child schmigeggy.” Also accused Jonathan of wearing tight jeans with a bandanna tied around the leg with a GQ haircut in high school.

Notes: Livewire’s scoring appears to feature the Peter Gunn theme as rendered by Rock ‘N’ Roll Racing.
